Ok everyone! You know that I want to put my money where my mouth is… I gave you a real life example of following my own advice when it comes to setting goals and objectives in my blog post about “Setting Goals and Objectives using the Mantis Rototiller as an Example” last week.
****Well, I wanted to give you an update.****
You saw that I did not hit my target on my 5th objective, which was:” Build a Squidoo Lens about small garden tillers and add Amazon links to it. Target Completion Date: Thursday, February 24, 2011.”
Well, I’m here to tell you that I have completed that objective
No, not on February 24th – I completed it on Saturday, February 27, 2011.
Yes, I realize that I did not hit the target date – but you know what? That objective was staring me in the face, and I need to account not only to you, my readers, but to MYSELF.
Having that objective WRITTEN and IN FRONT of me pushed me forward.
And I have to tell you, I had an absolute BLAST writing that Squidoo lens. Actually, if you want to read it, you’ll see that I had a little TOO much fun with it since now we have weiner dogs (aka dachshunds) and videos of “The Garden Song” in the mix.
So, I invite you to see the results of my ACTION that I took on that objective. I hope it puts a smile on your face as well. Enjoy it here => Mantis Rototillers, Weiner Dogs, AND The Garden Song.
I hope you can see that setting goals and objectives – and taking action on them – doesn’t need to be a brutal or painful process. After all, if we’re making progress, we should be feeling good about it, right? Something to think about. 🙂

Just a quick post about internet marketing education ala Chris Farrell. He’s the best. Hands down.
Frankly, I had never even heard of Chris Farrell before this past August. Iwas going along merrily, marketing my various websites – marketing cheap discount kids clothes at the time, and writing about resort vacations (which John & I love).
At the time, I had been marketing online for 3 years, and was seeing some excellent results and progress. My sites were growing in popularity and rank. But I also realized that I needed to take my businesses to the next level. And I had also been wanting to launch additional sites offering Self Development and Growth resources, since this is a topic very dear to my heart.
It was around then that my search for additional marketing materials brought Chris Farrell and his internet marketing education services to my attention. I spent hours watching and learning from a wealth of free materials that Chris offers through his membership site (which you can access here => Chris Farrell Internet Marketing Education at www.YourInternetBasedBusiness.com)
Chris taught me strategies that frankly I had never even considered – for example, the importance of using Facebook marketing, relationship marketing, etc. I can honestly say that if it had not been for Chris Farrell, I would not be typing in my Self Development and Growth blog now. I would not have written the Personal Goal Planning Strategies guide that I sell at Self Development Strategies.
Chris Farrell has opened my eyes to a whole new level of internet marketing education that I had been previously unaware of. That’s the reason I decided to put an Internet Marketing Education section here at Self Development and Growth – because I’m sure that many other people who are interested in Personal Development are also the type of person who looks to venture into earning additional money online.

My long-time readers know how much I emphasize the importance of setting goals and objectives. Or, if you prefer, you can call it setting targets – some people just don’t like the word “goal.” 🙂
Well, this particular post is a bit off the beaten path in that the goals and objectives I’m going to share with you are not related to self development. BUT… What this post will clearly illustrate is how:
1) I practice what I preach in my Personal Goal Setting Strategies Guide, and
2) anyone can write clear and concise goals and objectives for nearly any endeavor.
Also, if you are a long-time reader, you know that I feel that most people get stuck right at the get-go – primarily, I believe, because they don’t know the difference between a goal and an objective. I’ve written extensively about this in my Goal Planning Strategies Guide, as well as in numerous articles online.

Rather than go into the whole long explanation of the difference between goals and objectives here, let’s just do a quick recap since you can read about that in depth in the Personal Goal Planning Strategies Guide. In a nutshell:
=> Goals = the broad view or “big picture.”
=> Objectives = the measurable steps you take to achieve your goals.
Because of some positive results I have seen from this activity, I decided to share my own latest activity and results of setting goals and objectives from the last week.
So, there I was, thinking about gardening, and THAT thought got me thinking about our garden (which is currently under snow at this time). Then, my mind wandered to how soft the earth would be when we got home in May, and how that will be the perfect time to get it ready for the garden.
And THAT got me thinking about our small garden tiller – The Mantis Rototiller/Cultivator that we’ve had for at least 10 years. 🙂
And THAT got me thinking that this would be the time of year when people would be getting ready to BUY a Mantis Rototiller/Cultivator, and THAT got me thinking, “Hmmm… I wonder if I could sell a few of these on some of my websites.”
So, I went over to Amazon.com and sure enough, there were several Mantis Rototillers for sale. I decided to go for it. BUT, first I needed a strategy.
Here is what I came up with:
GOAL: To market the Mantis Rototiller/Cultivator
a. Make a dedicated blog so that I can place content and ads about Mantis Rototillers/Cultivators. Target Completion Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2011
b. Place Amazon links for Mantis Rototillers/Cultivators for sale on the blog. Target Completion Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2011
c. Write article about Mantis Rototillers/Cultivators for sale and publish at eZineArticles.com. Target Completion Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2011
d. Build a “small garden tiller” page on one of my websites (that I owned at the time), and add Mantis links to that page. Target Completion Date: Monday, February 21, 2011
e. Build a Squidoo Lens (which was a “page” in Squidoo-speak – but in 2014, Squidoo was sold to HubPages, and so that’s where the article is now) about small garden tillers and add Amazon links to it. Target Completion Date: Thursday, February 24, 2011
How do you think I did? 🙂
Actually, I did quite well – although I did not hit my target dates. Here’s how I measured up:
a. (Make dedicated blog) = I got the Mantis Rototillers for Sale blog up and running on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. (One day off, but at least I got it out there)
b. (Place Amazon links on blog) = Also completed Wednesday, February 16, 2011
c. (Write article for eZineArticles.com) = Completed Wednesday, February 16, 2011, but it didn’t go “live” until Friday, February 18, 2011.
d. (Build “small garden tiller” page on a website) = Completed new “small garden tillers” page on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 (a couple of days late)
e. (Build a Squidoo Lens) = Not yet complete – probably won’t get that done until Thursday 2/24 or Friday 2/25. (Remember, 2015: It’s now at HubPages.com)
As a result of this activity list, I was able to MEASURE my progress. Something else it did for me was make me realize that there were other aspects to the goal that I had NOT written a plan for – namely, researching the viability of whether or not I could actually COMPETE with others in selling Mantis Rototillers/Cultivators! 🙂
Fortunately, I did do research to make sure I wasn’t going to waste my time – but because I hadn’t PLANNED on that activity in my step-by-step plan, and determined it would be a good use of my time.
So, here you can see from my own “real life” example how I used the process of setting goals and objectives – and it really started with knowing the difference between goals and objectives to begin with. 🙂
Hopefully, seeing how I applied the knowledge to get a commercial campaign up and running fairly quickly will help you as well.

I was inspired to talk a little about the concept of Giving and Receiving after reviewing Part 4 of The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel.
I really love to give gifts. For some reason, I love the whole action of thinking of what someone might enjoy, and then going through the process of procuring the gift.
And the gifts I give aren’t always of monetary or material value – sometimes they involve food. 🙂 For example, when I was growing up, every Christmas season I would don a little red & green plaid pinafore that I used as an apron, and start baking chocolate chip cookies.
I made DOZENS of these chocolate chip cookies. Then, I would carefully arrange them on paper plates, and walked over to various neighbors’ houses and give them all away (well… ok, I kept a FEW for our own family).
I had so much fun doing this. I never did it with any expectation of receiving anything back. The warm feeling I had inside my heart always seemed to be enough.
Even though I’m not a kid anymore, I still do this! Even down in South Carolina where I am wintering as I write this post, I did it. I am staying in a condominium complex where there aren’t a lot of residents, I have gotten to know the staff here. So I baked for all of them!

Do you every feel like you need help overcoming procrastination? If so, you are DEFINITELY not alone!
Please believe me when I tell you that this particular little demon has been one that I have extensive personal experience with. 🙂 My dad has also admitted to me that he procrastinates. Sometimes we joke around about it, “Never put off today what you can put off tomorrow,” or, “Seize the day, tomorrow.”
I love the tagline at www.Procrastinators.org – “Productivity is Overrated.”
But while overcoming procrastination may not be a serious issue for some – it is practically crippling for others.
Especially for those who need to produce results on deadlines, for anyone who has to reach sales or productivity quotas, for students who need to finish their homework, for the parent who promised to bake cookies for the school event, for those who are self employed … you get the idea. It can be an obstacle for just about anyone.
Sometimes, it doesn’t really seem like procrastination is all that harmful (especially when people joke about it so much…).
But consider, for a moment, being the parents who put off baking the cookies for their kids’ school event. What kind of message are the parents sending the kids?
Or, how about the self-employed entrepreneur? If you happen to be self-employed – whether it’s in a bricks and mortar business or in an internet based marketing business – you may have heard the old saying:
“The great thing about being self-employed is that no one tells you what to do. The bad thing about being self-employed is that no one tells you what to do.”
So, as it turns out, overcoming procrastination is actually rather important, isn’t it?
Again, I’m not saying that the occasional bout is anything to worry about – but if it starts getting in the way of seeing positive results in your life, guess what? Then it’s a problem or obstacle that needs to be addressed.

When I was a kid, my Dad gave me a lot of encouragement, and he read lots of motivational poems to me. One of them was “It Couldn’t Be Done” by Edgar A. Guest. The poem was in a book called “The Best Loved Poems of the American People” – which I still have (see the photo) and which is now in a very tattered state!
I owe a LOT to my Dad. He was – and still is – one of my greatest pillars of support. I learned more from him than I think I have ever learned from anyone else in my life. Actually, I think I’ll need to share more about my Dad in some future posts – but suffice it to say that if everyone had a Dad as amazing as mine has been, it would be a more wonderful world than it already it.
(By the way – this is not to dismiss the amazing gifts I also received from my Mom, who unfortunately left this earth far too soon in 1987 after a long illness… I miss her very much, and I’m guessing I’ll write about her as well!)

I just watched Gary Ryan Blair’s (aka “The Goals Guy”) video for his 100-Day Challenge called “Time is Money.” This particular video – it’s not real long – just a few minutes – is almost scary.
No. Scratch that… It IS scary. The reason WHY it is scary is because it is true. Everything he talks about – the fact that there is one resource in the world that is NOT for sale, and NOT for exchange, and NOT able to be bartered.
That resource is TIME.
The scary thing is, it is also one of the easiest things to waste. And I know I’ve done my share.

The most unlikely muse for a self development blog entry was a fairly recent memory of my experience involving an incident with scissors and my hair.
Usually, like most ordinary folk, I pay someone to cut my hair. My hair is rather unremarkable and simple to cut.
It takes the average stylist approximately 5-10 minutes to trim up my hair, which is so fine, that when wet, lies plastered flat against my head that you can practically see all the bumps and curves.
I estimate that it takes about the same time for the stylist to cut my husband’s hair.
What has continually irked me is that I get charged AT LEAST $5-$10 more for the cut than my husband gets charged. “Because ladies’ cuts are more complex,” is one reason I’ve been given.
But I don’t buy it. Because how difficult is it to cut a straight line? My hair is straight, so fine that all of it can be grasped in a baby’s fist – and frankly, three good swipes with the shears oughta do it.
Or so I thought.
For several years, I had wanted to experiment with cutting my own hair. The last straw was when I went to a stylist down in (town which will not be named) in South Carolina, and asked if she could give me a quick trim.
No wash, no styling, no blow-dry – just a couple of quick cuts to get those dead ends off.
She was done in less than 5 minutes. In fact, I hardly noticed any hair on the floor.
Which was interesting.
When I asked how much – expecting her to say, “ oh, let’s call it $5…” maybe even “$8…” – she said, “That’ll be $15.”
I hid my surprise, and handed her a $20 bill.
Expecting her to give me some change.
She gave me a funny look when I kept my wallet open, so, with some embarrassment, I told her to keep the change (which was already in her pocket.).
So, when I went home, I asked my husband how it looked. With a somewhat quizzacle look, he asked “How does what look?” (Emphasis on “what.”)
I said, “My hair!”
He did not notice. He asked, “How much did that cost?” (Emphasis on “that.”)
I told him. It was at that moment I resolved to cut my own hair next time.
The “next time” came a few nights later. It was about 11:00 pm, and I had the courage to pick up the scissors. I had been picturing the look I was after for a long time, so I tipped my head forward, grasped the hair in my hand and hacked away.
When I looked in the mirror, I was pleased.
Until morning, when the light was better.
I saw that the back had a line of a partial cut going from the right side, a little slanted down toward the middle of the back of my head, where the cut abruptly stopped – and the rest of what was left hung below that cut.
“Layered!” I thought. “I inadvertently layered my hair!” But the problem was, it was only layered on one side of my head. And there was absolutely NO WAY that I could replicate what I had done the night before. At 11:00 pm.
The only thing left to do was to shower and wash my hair, then blow dry it, and curl it up into a sassy flip (which I did, and which hid the slash mark).
Fortunately, my hair grows faster these days than it did when I was a kid – but, the fact of the matter is, at some point I knew I had to go to a stylist and get it cut again.
Which I did.
And the stylist looked with interest at the last cut, and said something like, “Hmmm. And it looks as though we went with a partial layering last time, did we?”
At which point, I had to either ‘fess up, or lie.
And as much as I don’t always care for ‘fessing up, I despise lying – because that is just not me.
Picture me saying in a breezy and carefree tone of voice, “Oh, yes! You noticed! Thank you darling! We discussed the matter at some length prior to committing to this trend-setting cut – but, frankly, I’ve tired of the style, and would like to once again try the straight cut…”
Of course it wouldn’t work. Fortunately, I was far away from home, where no one who sees me on a day-to-day basis would really notice.
And that whole story, of course, brings me to the point of this post. Now what (you may be asking yourself) does this whole ridiculous story have to do with self development strategies?
Well, not a whole lot at first glance. But, the whole idea of “cutting corners” (a little pun, given the hair cut theme) is actually rather critical in life.
For example, sure, you can say, “Well, I need to do some work on my goals, but I don’t really need to write them down…” (a tad related to my own sorry little tale… Because NOT writing down your goals is cutting an important corner.).
Or, “I want to get some personal development training, but why should I pay someone to help me when there’s so much for free on the internet?” (Answer – again – related to my decision to cut my own hair and save money… “Because you get what you pay for!”)
Or, perhaps you just need to buckle down and just do what the self-development experts advise, and use proven methods of getting the job done and achieving your goals – and getting them done correctly the first time instead of attempting to reinvent the wheel, cutting corners, or trying to get something for nothing.
One look at my lovely home done haircut would have convinced you! And no, I am NOT posting a photo… 🙂

Ok… So this is just a LITTLE off topic regarding personal development. But not THAT far off topic. Actually, now that I think about it, this will really be a good post under the Marketing category. Because as anyone who works in marketing will agree, there is plenty of room for self development!
Last night, the phone rang just around dinner time. Now, whenever the phone rings just around dinner time in our house, it is pretty safe to assume that it is a telemarketing call. Also, the fact that the number was “unknown” is yet another reason to suspect a marketing call.
Now, first let me say that I do NOT have a problem with telemarketers. It’s a job, and someone is doing that job. I understand and appreciate that.
(Uh… by the way – please do NOT take that as an invitation to call me and market to me! Really… I get enough calls as it is, even though I’m on the “Do Not Call” list.) 🙂
So, anyway, since it was John’s phone that was ringing, he picked up and said Hello. The person on the other end asked for me (using my full name, which no one who actually knows me ever does). John merely asked, “May I tell her who’s calling?”
To which the guy on the other end spat out, “I’ll call her when she’s not being censored!”
Huh? What the…
Now, that is the SECOND time this guy has called, and the SECOND time he has angrily told John that he’d call when I wasn’t being “censored.”
First of all, what is he talking about regarding me being “censored!?” There is absolutely nothing wrong with somone asking who is calling.
Second of all, the guy’s angry tone toward John didn’t exactly warm me up to want to speak with him for ANY reason whatsoever!
TeleMarketing people take note: This is no way to win friends and influence people (unless you really do want to influence them in a negative way enough times so that you’ll lose your job and have something to be angry about).
What if the caller actually had a product that may have been of interest to me? He wouldn’t stand a chance of ever selling it to me now. All he had to do to increase his odds of my accepting his call would have been to:
1) Identify his phone number, and
2) Give us his name and the company he was representing.
Consider, also, the negative energy that the caller was putting out over the ether. Honestly, what kind of results was he attracting to himself?
I really found the whole episode amazing. And the fact that he has called and spoken like this before is even more amazing!
Hopefully, he’ll find another line of work…
